Having escaped her abusive ex-husband Goss, recently released from state prison, Agnes, a lonely waitress with a tragic past moves into a sleazy, rundown motel. Her lesbian co-worker R.C. introduces her to Peter, a peculiar, paranoiac drifter and they begin a tentative romance. However, things aren't always as they appear and Agnes is about to experience a claustrophobic nightmare reality as the bugs begin to arrive...

William Friedkin directed 'The Exorcist', one of the very best horror films ever made. Once again, he is in top form for 'Bug' though this is not so much a traditional horror flick as a vivid character study that is not afraid to challenge it's audience. Practically the entire plot unfolds in Agnes' ratty motel room, which creates a dense atmosphere of isolation and confinement that mirrors the disintegrating mental landscape inhabited by our unfortunate protagonists. Though there are some gruesome scenes, primarily the horror here is cerebral in nature. The brief scenes of violence are shocking but it is the moments of almost unbearable tension that linger in the mind. In short, this is one of a small number of films (Roman Polanski's 'Repulsion' comes to mind) that immerse the audience in the inner workings of madness rather than simply portraying it's more lurid outer manifestations.
