Description: Synopsis from Five Star Laser: A pitiful young orphan Bang Woo-Ree is deceived to go into the city working as a hooker. At first, she is not used to serving her customers. However, because she needs to make a living and repay her debts, she has no choice and continues to work at a whorehouse. After a few years, Woo-Ree gets very famous in the red light district, and everyone has heard of her name amongst those whores. Yet, she is not able to get out of it and live an ordinary life. Fortunately enough, Woo-Ree meets a guy who takes good care of her and understands her in such an evil and deplorable environment.

Review from YesAsia: Despite doing relatively well at the box office and being Im's first film as screenwriter, Downfall has been remembered more for Shin Eun Kyung's extremely revealing performance than for anything dealing with the film itself. Cast right after a drunk driving scandal which put her career in jeopardy, Shin gave it her all in Downfall, which uses prostitution to reflect the changes Korean society went through between the 70s and 90s. Shin, Im, and crew spent more than two months in the red light district to better understand the psychology of the business. Despite Im's usual fragmented storytelling, the film had good performances and managed to say something intelligent, but it was not well received by critics and is still unfairly remembered as one of the darkest moments in Im's career.
