BLACKOUT takes you inside the personal journey of what went down and what it was really like in Brooklyn, NY on August 14. It examines the nature of man to take advantage of his own fellow man outside of normal conditions, in times of weakness and vulnerability.

IMDB

Synopsis: In the summer of 2003, the East Coast of America was literally consumed by darkness. Though in the midst of the largest blackout in U.S. history most news reports spoke of the relative calm in a potentially chaotic situation, the situation in Brooklyn's East Flatbush neighborhood would soon become extremely volatile. As night fell over East Flatbush and looters came out of the shadows, violence flared and the citizens prepared for one of the most terrifying nights of their lives.
User Comment at IMDB:
This movie turned out perfect. It had the rich point of view of an indie film, while it had a perfect cast and Hollywood standard of high quality footage. The characters are very believable in this movie, and the brilliant scenes were creating a great atmosphere of a Brooklyn block house and its surrounding. The streets were very alive and I haven't gotten bored for a single moment while watching this movie.

Girls in the flick are beautiful and some even little 'hoochie', which makes them even more hot. Zoe Saldana, the beauty of Dominican origin and Susan Watson really shined in this movie. Also not well known Khalida Outlaw was great and Sara Pickett was a great discovery, which will hopefully be seen a lot in the future.
The story is believed to be based on true characters and events. I don't want to spoil anything, but I can surely tell the movie graduates into very realistic drama events. There were comments like the whole building up characters gets them nowhere in the plot. That's absolutely not true. Each characters have a set of very own approach and perception of the reality that's going on. I recommend this film to anyone, and I'm rating it 8.

Guess Who (2005) Kevin Rodney Sullivan

Guess Who (2005) Kevin Rodney Sullivan
Director: Kevin Rodney Sullivan | Writer: David Ronn | Cast: Bernie Mac, Ashton Kutcher, Zoe Saldana, Judith Scott, Hal Williams | Genre: Comedy, Romance | Awards: 16 nominations | Music: John Murphy | Producers: Ashton Kutcher, Erwin Stoff, Jason Goldberg, Jenno Topping | Cinematography: Karl Walter Lindenlaub | Editor: Paul Seydor | Runtime: 106 Min | Format: DvdRip, Color, NTSC, Avi | Language: English | Country: USA

Guess Who is a 2005 comedy film about US race relations, directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan. It is a remake of the 1967 film Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, in the form of a romantic comedy. The films stars Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac. It was remade into Tamil as Kannamoochi Yenada in 2007.

IMDB

Synopsis: A man gets a very big surprise when he meets his prospective son-in-law in this comedy. Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) is the understandably proud father of Theresa (Zoe Saldana), a beautiful and intelligent young woman living in New York City. When Percy learns that his daughter is dating someone and things are getting serious, he decides to do some research, and learns that her beau is a solid businessman. Percy arranges to meet the young man, but is a bit taken aback when he comes face to face with Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) -- Percy and his wife are African-American, and Simon is very, but very Caucasian. When it becomes clear that Simon and Theresa's relationship is likely altar-bound, Percy finds himself suddenly full of misgivings about the young man, especially since Simon tends to get rather clumsy when he's nervous. Guess Who was loosely adapted from the 1967 hit Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, though the race of the prospective father and son have been swapped, and the original film's comic undercurrent has been pushed to the forefront.

A swirling cloud of suspicion hovers over the night Bobby Kennedy was killed. Why can't the supposed assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, remember the shooting? Why were three CIA agents seen in the room? And who was the mysterious girl in the polka-dot dress? Using stunning new audio analysis and rare footage from the crime scene, this documentary asks some provocative questions about that fateful night in 1968.

IMDB

Synopsis: RFK Must Die: The Assassination of Bobby Kennedy is an investigative documentary by Irish writer and filmmaker Shane O'Sullivan. The film expands on his earlier reports for BBC Newsnight and the Guardian and explores what really happened the night Bobby Kennedy was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5th, 1968. The title comes from a page of "automatic writing" found in Sirhan Sirhan's notebook after the shooting, in which he wrote "R.F.K. must die - RFK must be killed Robert F. Kennedy must be assassinated… before June 5 '68."
Running on an anti-war ticket, Kennedy had just won the California Democratic primary and was confident he would challenge Nixon for the White House. As he walked through the hotel pantry, shots rang out and he fell to the floor, fatally wounded by a bullet to the brain, fired from an inch behind his right ear. 24-year old Palestinian Christian Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of murder as the "lone assassin" but witnesses placed Sirhan several feet in front of Kennedy and for forty years he claims he has never been able to remember the shooting. Defense psychiatrist Bernard L. Diamond concluded Sirhan was in a hypnotic state at the time of the shooting and FBI agent William Bailey saw extra bullet holes in the pantry suggesting a second gunman may have been involved...

An attractive girl in a polka-dot dress was seen with Sirhan in the pantry moments before the shooting. Minutes later, a girl of similar description ran down a fire escape, past Kennedy volunteer Sandra Serrano, exclaiming "We shot him! We shot Kennedy!". The LAPD could not find her, so they harshly interrogated Serrano until she retracted her statement. The LAPD concluded the girl did not exist but in her first filmed interview since the night of the shooting, Sandra Serrano still sticks to her story.
In his first filmed interview for almost forty years, Sirhan's younger brother Munir - Sirhan's only surviving family member - describes Sirhan's upbringing and what he perceives as the many injustices in the case. Today, Sirhan is America's last surviving political assassin, locked away in the same California prison as Charles Manson for a crime he claims he cannot remember. Since 9-11, some revisionist historians have cast him as "the first Arab terrorist" despite the fact he and his family are Christian and have been living in Pasadena since 1957.
After a three-year investigation, RFK Must Die was theatrically released in the UK on May 16th and in New York on June 5th, the fortieth anniversary of the assassination.

Synopsis: Carlos Cuarón, who co-wrote the script for his brother Alfonso Cuarón's breakthrough hit, Y Tu Mama Tambien, makes his feature directorial debut with Rudo y Cursi. The film also reunites the stars of the earlier film, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, and is the first release from the production company Alfonso started with Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu, Cha Cha Chá. Rudo y Cursi depicts the changing relationship between two brothers who become soccer stars. Beto (Luna), the goaltender, is nicknamed "Rudo" because of his hardnosed style of play, while Tato (Bernal), a forward, gets the nickname "Cursi" for his flamboyant goal celebrations and his flashy lifestyle. They both start out picking bananas in remote Tlachatlán, where they share a devotion to their mother. Then Batuta (Argentinean comic Guillermo Francella), a charmingly shiftless professional scout, happens by. He can only sign one of the brothers, so they battle it out on the pitch to see who gets his break. Instead of throwing the match to his brother as plan, Tato scores a goal and is on his way to stardom. He's more interested in becoming a pop star than a soccer star, but when he meets Maya (Jessica Mas), a famous TV hostess he's dreamed about for years, he begins to enjoy the trappings of fame. Meanwhile, resentful Beto waits for his chance. When he finally gets his break, he leaves his disapproving wife Toña (Adriana Paz) and his kids to sneak off to Mexico City. The brothers' fortunes rise and fall, with Tato distracted by a demanding girlfriend and a hopeless singing career, while Beto deals with marital strife and a serious gambling problem. Rudo y Cursi had its New York Premiere at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival.

Kosovo: Can You Imagine? (2009) Boris Malagurski
Director: Boris Malagurski | Writer: Boris Malagurski | Genre: Short, War, Foreign | Editor: Boris Malagurski | Runtime: 30 Min | Format: DvdRip, Color, NTSC, Avi | Language: English, Serbian | Country: Canada

IMDB

Synopsis: Kosovo: Can You Imagine? is a documentary film by Canadian filmmaker Boris Malagurski, about the Serbs that live in Kosovo and the lack of human rights that they have today, in the 21st century. Most of the Kosovo Serbs have been ethnically cleansed by the Albanians who make up the majority of Kosovo.
Kosovo has been under UN administration since 1999 when NATO bombed Serbia for 78 days to halt a crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatism in its province of Kosovo.
In the years following the war, thousands of Serbs were expelled from their homes, kidnapped and killed. Their houses, cultural and religious sites were burned and destroyed.
Kosovo for the Serbs is what Jerusalem is for the Jewish people. It is the cradle of their statehood, culture and religion. Most of the important Serbian Christian Orthodox monasteries are in Kosovo. Today, Serbs still have a deep spiritual and traditional connection to Kosovo, a land which is being cleansed of everything Serbian. Most of the Kosovo Serbs are internally displaced, some of them live in small containter camps, in ghettos, all this in the heart of Europe in the 21st century.
We follow the stories of several Serbs who have fell victim to a nationalist and irredentist ideology that has a goal of creating a pure Albanian state of "Kosova" ("Kosovo" in Albanian)
Serbs in Kosovo have no basic human rights. You will be shocked to learn which atrocities they have to face each day.

Hou sheng: The young rebel (1975) - Ti Lung

Image

Movie Info:
Director: Ti Lung
Cast: David Chiang, Ti Lung, Lo Dik, Chiang Tao, Fung Ngai
Original Title: Hou sheng
Production Country: Hong Kong 1975

Review:
The Young Rebel is one of several dramatic action films Shaw Brothers stars Ti Lung and David Chiang teamed up on to create in conjunction with Chang Cheh's Taiwanese-based film company. It bares resemblance to Cheh's juvenile delinquency films like The Delinquent and The Generation Gap, but sees Ti Lung stepping behind the camera to direct himself. Also different is the film's replacement of Chang's patented heroic bloodshed with a more socially conscious theme.
David Chiang stars as the title character, a troublesome youth named Xiang Rong who is forced to get a job to support his mother and sister after his father dies. His friend Gen Lai (Ti Lung) lands him a job delivering groceries, but Xiang frequently quarrels with his new boss. After two years of this, Xiang's run-in with bullying thugs leads him to learn kung fu. Driven by his inner demons, Xiang advances far beyond his fellow students at the gym. But seeing his aggressive tendencies, his master (played by Simon Yuen) asks him to leave. One fateful grocery run leads Xiang to the thugs' boss (Lo Dik) and a new high-paying job as an enforcer. But when Xiang is asked to kill, he finds himself in over his head with his mother threatened and the only way out is to fight.
A "socially conscious" kung fu movie is not a bad idea, unless it ages as poorly as The Young Rebel has. Chiang's rebelliousness is quaint by today's standards and the ruffians he mixes with are nothing more than caricatures. A scene where the gang, led by Kong Do, introduce themselves to Chiang is unintentionally funny as they run through the list of illicit gratuities they can offer him such as drugs and women. It's implied that Chiang is initially angry over his father's death, but there's no explanation for his continual delinquency over the span of several years. As is usually the case in their movies together, Ti Lung plays Chiang's more responsible brother, this time not by blood but by close friendship. Yet, Ti spends most of his time behind the camera, leaving Chiang to run amok with little guidance. What starts out as a drama gives in completely to kung fu mayhem in the second half. This creates an unevenness to the story that makes it hard to swallow the commentary on misunderstood youth.
The first half of The Young Rebel lacks any quality martial arts action simply because Chiang's character doesn't know how to fight. What we get instead are scenes of him clubbing gang members with a big lamb chop or running from them in an extended bicycle chase. This chase does not hold up well at all as it's slow-paced and lacking any element of danger or desperation. Wong Chung's motorcycle battle with thugs in The Delinquent is a much better example of how to make an action scene on two-wheeled vehicles interesting.
In the second half, the action gets much better as Ti Lung appears out of nowhere to rescue Chiang from getting a royal beating. From here on, it picks up as Chiang quickly becomes a kung fu expert himself after wiping the floor with all of his classmates. He even battles Ti briefly. This is all setup for the final, explosive events as Chiang first fights for the gang boss and eventually turns on him. Backing up Lo Dik are his lieutenants played by strongman Lee Hoi-sang and the well-dressed Eddy Ko Hung, both genre regulars. With Kong Do added as a lesser thug, the film can definitely boast as having an excellent set of screen villains for Chiang to take on. Lau Kar-wing and his co-choreographers handle the action very well and offer up the sort of rugged, street-style kung fu boxing that was popular in most contemporary films of the day. Chiang also handles himself well in these scenes, even though he is not one of SB's stronger screen fighters.
Dramatically, the second half is also better as it deals with the responsibility a martial artist has to not misuse his or her abilities. Simon Yuen reluctantly must sever relations with his best student because Chiang refuses to keep his inner rage under control. Chiang's training amplifies the effects of his bad decisions that he continues to make. Of course this leads to some great action, but we also see Chiang forced to face the results of his mistakes.
Sammo Hung makes an unusual appearance as a gambling thug. It's more of a cameo and he doesn't fight unfortunately, but the fact that he's even in a Shaw Brothers film is interesting considering that most of his classic kung fu-era screen appearances have been in Golden Harvest films.
The Young Rebel finishes well and this helps to make up for the film's dated drama, a low-intensity first half, and the limited presence of Ti Lung. It's actually nice to see a potential romantic angle curbed and the focus on Chiang's relationship with his mother strengthened. Yet, what really sells the movie is the action once Chiang gets fired up and turned loose on the baddies.

Hak Bak Jin Cheung: Colour of the loyalty (2005) - Wong Jing, Billy Chung

Production Country: Hong Kong 2005

Review:
Following the success of "Infernal Affairs," there have been many films imitating but often failing in duplicating the movie in terms of box office success, script, acting ability, etc. This one delivers . . . kinda. The same problems I had with "Infernal Affairs" are still present in this film.
The story is complicated, but aren't they all? Shawn Yu plays "Fat," an orphan raised by his "Uncle Chai." Uncle Chai is a follower of Brother Dragon, who is played convincingly by Eric Tsang. And the movie follows them through a period of a year or so, where everything important seems to happen. Tsang is a very good actor in my opinion. His diminutive frame precedes and almost underestimates him. However, like in this film, and the other films that I've seen with him in it, he often steals the scenes, and is able to switch from "menacing" to "sympathetic" effortlessly and without seeming contrived.
The film in itself is more violent than your average HK crime/drama, although in some areas, it pussyfoots around where an unflinching camera shot would have been very effective. The twist ending is believable and very well-written.
The flaws of this film include Tsang's eyebrows (You'll know what I mean), Yue's inability to enunciate his words made for listening to the dialogue a chore, crappy acting and stereotypical roles by the female leads that almost made them unbelievable, and underestimated their execution. It may seem like there are many flaws. However, the main focus is not in their romantic lives. So other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

The White Darkness (2002) Richard Stanley

The White Darkness (2002) Richard Stanley
Director: Richard Stanley | Genre: Documentary | Music: Simon Boswell | Editors: Nick Guest, Phil Staines | Cinematography: Immo Horn | Runtime: 52 Min | Format: DvdRip, Color, NTSC, Avi | Language: English | Country: Haiti, UK

Directed by Richard Stanley, "The White Darkness" is a journey through Vodou with their practitioners as guides. Stanley interviews real followers of the Vodou faith and lets them do the explanations on what their religion is and what isn't. Unlike other documentaries, there is no narration here, and it's basically the images and the interviews what do the talking, allowing a real, objective and unbiased point of view about the religion. The documentary focuses on the modern Vodou religion, its ties to its African past, and its importance in modern Haiti. Finally, the relations of Vodou practitioners with other religions are explored, as well as the negative views that Christian missionaries have about the native Haitian faith, and the political impact this views played during the island occupation by foreign (mainly U.S.) peacekeeping forces.

IMDB

Synopsis: The White Darkness" is filled with very interesting footage of actual Vodou rites, that show the fervor of the Vodou followers and the roots of the religion as the result of the mixture of cultures. Some images may be shocking (animal sacrifice and ecstatic dances are part of Vodoun) to Western audiences, but "The White Darkness" treats its subject with a lot of respect and doesn't attempt to be sensationalist about it. It is actually this respect for Vodoun what makes the documentary an interesting work, as by letting the actual practitioners of Vodoun religion (including healers, musicians and Vodoun priests) explain their beliefs, the movie not only achieves to give deep insight on the Vodoun religion, but also a very warm and human feeling, as the movie takes away every rumor and misconception about the religion and shows it as what it is: a powerful display of human faith not very different than better known religions.

Director Richard Stanley really did a great job at putting together "The White Darkness", as not only the movie really shows his commitment to the subject, but also his talent to give it a consistent narrative. Divided in short segments tied by a common theme, the interviews are very clear, and Stanley shows an excellent use of images to tell their message. Cinematographer Immo Horn, who has been Stanley's frequent collaborator since his debut in "Voice of the Moon", shows once again his remarkable work behind the camera with wonderful images that bring the spirit of Haiti and its people alive. The excellent score by Simon Boswell is the icing of the cake and Stanley uses this elements to create a haunting and beautiful portrait of a religion that has its roots in one of the oldest traditions of the world. It's truly an outstanding work that show the talent and versatility of Stanley (who is probably better known for his excellent horror film "Dust Devil") behind the camera.
Overall the movie is a remarkable documentary about an interesting, and rarely discussed topic. While it could have benefited of a longer runtime, Richard Stanley makes the most of his material and offers an unbiased and objective portrait of an often misunderstood religion. The very refreshing human focus that "The White Darkness" takes on its subject definitely sets it apart from other documentaries, as it avoids paternalist or condescending attitudes in favor of an open and unbiased take on the Haitian spirituality. As Richard Stanley's film offers a look on Vodoun from the point of view of its practitioners, "The White Darkness" is an invaluable movie for sociologists and in general those interested in discovering more about the mysteries of this ancient religion. A really fascinating film.

Mat i syn : Mother and Son (1997) - Aleksandr Sokurov

Mat i syn (Мать и сын) - Aleksandr Sokurov (1997)
aka: "Mother and Son" - "Mère et Fils" - "Mutter und Sohn"
DVDRIP | 69 min | H264 672x432 | 25 fps | AC3 448 kb/s | 1,38 GB
Language: Russian | Subtitles: English.srt - French.srt | Genre: Art-house, Drama[/center]

Director: Aleksandr Sokurov
Writer: Yuri Arabov
Russia - 1997 - color
Cast: Aleksei Ananishnov, Gudrun Geyer

For those who appreciate art, nature, and the humbling magnificence of the cycle of life, here is a great simple film from one of the most creative filmmakers of today.
A son (Aleksei Ananishnov) comforts his terminally ill mother (Gudrun Geyer) with gentle caresses, combing her hair, sharing dreams that are identical, and providing solace in every way imaginable.
Aleksandr Sokurov in MAT I SYN (Mother and Son) has succeeded in capturing those brief, breathing moments that surround death, freezing them in an timeless mold like a shell in a crystal mass, something that goes beyond the passage of time and captures the essence of extended farewells. This brief film is one of the most probing and tender embraces of the meeting/meaning of life and death, of the continuity of a mother's soul in the form of her son, and most important, it is an elegy about the quiet power and beauty of nature.
Filmed on the island of Rügen close to the coast of Germany, with sounds from nature - rumbling thunder, wind in the trees - and minimal music, each frame is a still life of nature both with and without the two characters, and with the use of filters, mirrors and broken glass, the images are indescribably beautiful.
